Use Case 3: Shaping Sustainable Mobility with ENACT

Apr 4, 2025

As cities and companies worldwide strive toward greener, smarter futures, the demand for precise, real-time environmental data has never been more urgent. Monitoring carbon emissions and urban air quality is not only essential for environmental policies—it’s also a strategic asset for sustainability reporting, health planning, and intelligent mobility management. In this context, ENACT’s third use case, led by Fujitsu, brings to life a powerful solution based on Digital Twin technology and ENACT’s edge-to-cloud continuum.

This pilot integrates real-world traffic data, sensor networks, and edge computing to model urban mobility environments in real time. Leveraging the ENACT Cognitive Computing Continuum, the system dynamically processes large volumes of geo-referenced data—such as vehicle positions, road conditions, and environmental sensor outputs—at the edge, significantly reducing latency and ensuring instant decision-making capabilities.

Two critical applications define this use case. First, CO₂ Emissions Tracking for Businesses, which enables organizations to track emissions on a per-trip basis. This level of granularity allows companies to align with ESG goals and fulfill carbon accounting requirements. Thanks to ENACT’s orchestration layer and AI optimization tools, businesses can visualize emissions in real time and simulate the environmental impact of route or schedule changes before implementation.

Second, Urban Air Quality Monitoring, focused on real-time particulate emissions analysis. By correlating traffic flow data with pollutant levels and simulating various traffic light configurations, city planners gain powerful tools to reduce harmful emissions, especially in zones with vulnerable populations.

ENACT’s modular architecture ensures interoperability and security across all layers—from data acquisition at the edge, to AI-enhanced orchestration and decision support in the cloud. This use case exemplifies how the ENACT platform turns data into actionable insights, making sustainability not only measurable but manageable.

Through this pilot, ENACT demonstrates its commitment to building smarter, more sustainable urban ecosystems—where data, AI, and distributed computing work hand-in-hand to support both planetary and public health.
